Jamie Bell, the boy who entranced the world in Billy Elliot grew up and left his native Teeside for Hollywood years ago. Now starring in the big budget heist movie, Man on a Ledge and filming Irvine Welsh’s Filth, the actor is a walking advert for those who believe in making their own luck

Jamie Bell is jangling with energy. It might be the mugs of black coffee he’s knocking back. Or the can of Red Bull. Or maybe this is how he reacts when he’s ushered in and out of rooms of journalists for a day; dictaphones thrust towards him, red lights blinking their expectation that he will be full of chat and charm, that he’ll be both entertaining and also that he’ll say something new and different and previously unheard time after time after time. It can’t be the easiest gig in the world.

If it sounds like I’m setting him up for a fall, I’m not. I’m only telling you this because Bell isn’t exactly what I thought he would be and I wonder if the context is part of that, whether the plush surroundings and the conveyor belt questioning doesn’t really fit the boy from Teeside?

It’s not that he’s surly or monosyllabic. He makes quite a lot of noise, actually. Jokes, unexpected compliments (“I like your shirt” is his opening gambit before we’ve even been introduced, “I love Auld Lang Syne” his response to hearing my accent) it’s just that it doesn’t come as easily as I thought it might and it doesn’t add up to as much as I hoped it would.

For someone running at fully-caffeinated speed, Bell, it transpires, plays his cards close to his chest. In the days after we sit in the Four Seasons, him doing impressions of my accent that sound like Shrek with laryngitis while talking in his own Teeside-tinged-with-transatlantic-twang, it turns out that Bell may or may not be engaged to Evan Rachel Wood, his longterm on/off squeeze. It also turns out he may or may not be in talks to star alongside Tilda Swinton in an upcoming project (actually he did mention a new movie and the fact that he’s not allowed to talk about it) and that he was about to strut along the runway for Miuccia Prada alongside Gary Oldman and Adrien Brody. Little monkey didn’t mention a word about any of that. But that’s not to say he was entirely unforthcoming.

What’s his favourite kind of film? Documentary because “it’s worth an hour and a half”. What does he like to do when he’s not acting? Play the guitar. He plays with two mates and it’s a “bit sh**ty because I’m not that good and they’re awesome”. What keeps bringing him back to Scotland? “Its energy and its people”. Does he always drink this much caffeine? “This is nothing. I took Claritin. Woah, that stuff is strong. I woke up with a cat in my bed. Sounds weird. I woke up slightly stuffy so I took it and I feel wiped out.” And that’s before we get to his new film, Man on a Ledge, or his next project, a cinematic version of Irvine Welsh’s Filth with James McAvoy.

So why was Jamie Bell something different to what I thought he would be? I’m not really sure. Maybe it was my fault, that I got stuck in a time warp, not doing enough to dislodge that little dancing boy from my brain to fully engage with the Hollywood actor with nearly 20 movies under his belt. Maybe I fell foul of conflating Bell’s story with that first defining character and it just didn’t quite fit. It’s not that there aren’t parallels – a working-class boy from the north east of England transported by way of talent to the big time; a single-parent family making up in love and support what it lacked in money (Bell grew up with his mother and sister); a triumph against the odds (Bell tried out for the part against 2000 other hopefuls) – that’s what lends Bell’s success a certain fairy-tale aspect. But it’s not quite accurate.

“I’m definitely aware of the association with that movie and it’s a point of reference which is totally understandable,” he says, with a slight hint of resignation in his voice. “But I’m not going to lie, you can’t get anywhere without walking the pavement; you walk the pavement of the industry. Nothing is given to you. Even that Billy Elliot movie, it didn’t just fall out of a tree. It was lucky, if you consider luck to be preparation and good timing. The dancing for six years wasn’t for nothing. It’s really hard work. But am I fortunate being a working actor, part of the three per cent that goes to work? Yeah, for sure.”

And work he has. For more than a decade, Jamie Bell has been making movies. There have been big budget blockbusters, most recently Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, but before it King Kong and Jumper with Hayden Christiansen, and independents such as Hallam Foe (made in Scotland, of course) and Defiance with Daniel Craig. In fact, as an actor, Bell is really quite an astonishing proposition. He’s 25 with a career of more than a decade behind him. He’s been directed by Clint Eastwood and Peter Jackson as well as Spielberg, he’s acted alongside everyone from Michael Fassbender via Jack Black and Channing Tatum. It’s impressive. What’s even more amazing is that he’s done all that while still keeping himself neatly out of sight of the celebrity radar. Yes, he gets papped now and then – usually if he’s with Evan Rachel Wood, especially if she appears to be wearing an engagement ring – but he’s not exactly unable to nip round to the shops for a pint of milk. Even his biggest role to date, as Herge’s boy detective, hasn’t dented his anonymity because thanks to the wonders of motion capture technology nobody could tell that it was him.

Ask him to explain how he’s gone about creating the career he has and he makes being a movie star sound like it’s the easiest thing in the world. Ask him how he’s avoided becoming a child star casualty having started out so young and he bats it away with self-deprecation.

“It’s kind of ridiculous,” he says with a smirk. “I should’ve f***ed it up by now. Gone off the deep end. But I just do my thing and that’s it. There’s not really anything else to it. You turn up and do your part. That’s it, that’s your job. I just like working with really good people, talented people and forging lasting relationships.”

On the way to meet Bell amongst the manicured lawns of Beverly Hills (Bell lives in the hipper, rougher Venice area of LA) I pass billboards advertising Billy Elliot director, Stephen Daldry’s new film, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. It seems serendipitous. Bell has spoken before about how important Daldry has been for him, not just professionally but as a father figure. Is that the kind of relationship Bell is talking about?

“Absolutely. That one is very specific, very special. But even the Tintin thing came out of a relationship that was forged when I met Kathy [Kathleen Kennedy, producer and one of Spielberg’s closest collaborators] when I was 16 and working with Peter Jackson. That’s the way the industry works. So if you’re honest and do a good job, it rewards you. That’s what it’s about.”

I like his low-key explanation and I want to believe it. It makes me think he must’ve been an exceptional teenager. I know what I was like when I was 16 and I don’t think I would’ve been particularly capable of making a lasting impression on a Hollywood producer. Not for positive reasons anyway.

“I was a total tool,” he laughs. “Just a working tool, that’s all.”

He says that the industry isn’t what he thought it would be when he imagined as a teenager what being an actor would be like but it’s an explanation that sounds more realistic than disillusioned.

“There’s a bit of an illusory aspect to it. A lot of it is based on hot air and illusion. If you can play with that a bit but still at your core be a genuinely nice guy, or someone who just wants to do the work, I think you’ll go places. The industry’s tiny, really small, so as soon as someone says ‘he’s a complete bastard’, it’s done, over.”

Bell’s new movie, the thoroughly entertaining and ever so slightly silly Man on a Ledge, was great fun to make he says. There was lots of mucking about with his co-star Genesis Rodriguez, lots of smoking (he gave up on Hogmanay and then promptly fell off the wagon on January 1), and larks.

“We had good fun. Too much fun. I don’t think we spent any time in our trailers. ‘Where are Genesis and Jamie?’ Smoking. It was fun. There were jokes. And dancing.”

It shows too; it’s a properly entertaining heist-movie with a cracking ensemble cast (Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Ed Harris, Anthony Mackie and Ed Burns), some popcorn-chokingly tense moments and some laughs too. The comedy comes mainly from Bell, as Joey Cassidy the younger brother of Nick Cassidy (Worthington), the ex-cop standing on a ledge high above the streets of Manhattan in order to prove he didn’t steal a priceless diamond, and his sidekick and girlfriend Angie (Genesis Rodriguez). They bicker and giggle and are generally goofy while they’re also attempting to break into a high-security vault.

The movie is deliberately lo-fi. Bell’s character evades a CCTV system by rolling up a corridor on a large skateboard, a spy-cam is fixed into place with a piece of chewed gum. It’s deliberately not... “Ocean’s 11,” he says, finishing my sentence. “These characters aren’t well versed in that kind of world.”

There’s a twitchiness about Bell in the movie that’s not so far from what he’s like for real. He’s whippet-thin, his physique is surprisingly dancer-like, he’s small and lean but he looks wiry and strong. His feet are up on the table, then they’re down. The chair is spun round so he can lean on its back while he swings. He scratches his leg (“mosquito bite” he says, a souvenir from a recent trip to Mexico where he spent New Year) and twists his hands. One of reasons that Bell nailed Billy Elliot all those years ago – as well as the dancing of course – was that he was one of those kids who looked as though he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. The furrowed brow, the slightly hooded eyes, the fragile features. He still looks like that. He hasn’t developed classic leading man looks, there is no square jaw, no identikit features. He still looks worried. And despite the fact that he’s been living in Los Angeles for five years now, there is most definitely no tan.

“It’s just as well,” he says. “I’m playing a Scotsman next week.” Fair point.

Suntan aside, he seems settled in LA. He says he likes “stupid things” about the city: the studios, the history.

“When I first came here I was like ‘oh sh*t, this is where they make movies’ so I still have that nostalgic approach to it. You know, it’s not a bad place to live. It’s kind of beautiful. There’s also a part of it that’s f***ing hideous but I think that’s the way it is with most places.

“But it is bizarre that I’ve ended up here. It is kind of strange.”

I guess what he means is that it’s not often that a boy who grows up in Billingham on Teeside doing his GCSEs at the local comprehensive ends up being a movie star in Los Angeles. It’s that fairy-tale thing again, it’s hard to escape. After all, when Bell went to the Cannes Film Festival for the first time, it was only the second time he had been on a plane. He was always a performer – he danced, as did his sister, for years before the acting came along. Family holidays were organised around dance competitions and the medals and trophies were stacked in the cabinet at home. But still, it’s not exactly Hollywood. I wonder what it’s like when Bell goes back to Billingham, where his mum still lives.

“Everything just seems so much smaller,” he says. “I remember the town centre as this vast playground of all kinds of unknowns. And now it’s like wow, Billingham town centre. My perspective is so different because I didn’t stay there, so I still have the perspective of a small person, a little boy. It’s like when I go to my grandparents’ house, I literally feel like I’m in hobbit world. That is a very surreal experience. It’s like a Michel Gondry movie whenever I go to my grandparents’ houses.”

Work has brought Bell back to the UK for at least a few months each year and he reckons 2012 will be no different. He’s in Scotland now beginning work on Filth and he’s tempted to find some more independent, smaller scale films to do after that.

“I love Sigma Films in Glasgow [with whom he made Hallam Foe]. I love what they do. I definitely feel like part of that family so I’d like to support it.

“It’s like there’s a magnetic propellent that takes me back to Scotland. I love its people and I love its energy. Whenever someone says you’ve got to go back to Scotland it’s like, of course. It’s like a homecoming. And my last name is Bell.”

And your first name is Jamie, I add.

“Is that Scottish too? F***’s sake, well I’m an honorary Scot then.”

I’m going to make a movie with James McAvoy called Filth which is based on a novel by Irvine Welsh.

We start shooting that next week in Scotland. I play a policeman for the first time, a corrupt policeman though. We’re not very good policemen.

TeenHollywood: Did you do any research for that?

Jamie: No because the policeman part doesn’t actually matter. We could be builders or plumbers. That’s not the point. It’s actually McAvoy’s movie. He’s the one that has the really dark transformation.

I’ve never seen him play that kind of f**ked up character before. He’s all on drugs and all that and a bit crazy so I’m really excited to work with McAvoy. It’s going to be a real transformation for him.

My character is on the shady side of life for sure.

“I HAVE such an affinity for comedic stuff,” Jamie Bell says. “But I haven’t really let people know that yet.” Film audiences who have watched Bell suffer in such films as Billy Elliot (2000) and Defiance (2008) are in for a surprise when they see him in Man on a Ledge a heist caper which co-stars Edward Burns, Ed Harris and Sam Worthington.

Directed by Asger Leth, it’s scheduled to open on January 27.

“My part wasn’t overly complicated,” says the 25- year-old Bell, who plays Joey, who breaks into a high security building with his girlfriend (Genesis Rodriguez) to steal a diamond. It’s only one part of a plot to help his escaped-convict brother (Worthington) – the man actually out on the ledge – clear his name.

Bell considers Man on a Ledge a poor man’s Mission: Impossible. “I had to do a lot of climbing, dropping down holes and rappelling down shafts,” he says. “The director didn’t say, ‘You need to go to rappelling school so you can look like Tom Cruise.’ He said, ‘I want you to look like Joey from New Jersey.’ “I think it was crucial to him that these people were executing an extraordinary feat but were actually very ill-equipped to do it,” Bell says. “That worked for us quite well.” Bell had no scenes on the actual ledge, which was on an upper floor of New York’s Roosevelt Hotel, but couldn’t resist a taste of Worthington’s experience.

“I stood on it once to see what it felt like,” he says.

“It was testicle-clenching. Your heart starts racing a lot faster when people look like ants. I can’t imagine having to deliver a performance, and I can’t really imagine getting used to that sensation.

“You feel the cable in your back,” he says. “When you’re relaxing and there’s no tension on it, you literally feel like, if you make the wrong move, you’ll fall off.” Bell has made physically challenging movies before. For Billy Elliot, the film that made him famous virtually overnight, he trained vigorously in order to be believable when his character auditioned for the Royal Ballet. In The Eagle (2011), set in 2nd-century Britain, he rode horses and trudged over mountains.

For Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin, Bell faced a different kind of ordeal: He spent months in a motion-capture suit running around an empty sound stage. His job was to provide movement and facial expressions for Tintin, the intrepid boy reporter.

His physical fitness is not the result of self-denial or personal discipline, the young actor admits.

“Today I’ve had a horrendous diet,” Bell says. “I must have drunk 12 cups of coffee and had three Red Bulls, plus I had a hamburger for lunch. I haven’t had any water, and that bag of cookies is mine. I’ve abused my body so much, and it’s been so good to me, that I should pay it some respect.” He looks contrite, albeit briefly.

“Tomorrow I’ll probably go back to skipping breakfast,” he says. “I’ll sleep in and have a late lunch.

“My general outlook is not, ‘Must take care of myself,”’ Bell says. “Nor is it the opposite, ‘Must destroy myself.’ It’s ‘Must live conveniently,’ which isn’t usually the healthiest.” Although Bell has worked professionally for more than half his life and now has a home in Los Angeles, he has managed to avoid most of the bad behaviour that has undermined some of his contemporaries.

“You learn from other people’s mistakes,” he says, “and you don’t put your hand in the fire twice. “I’m quite an anxious person,” Bell admits, “and all that (celebrity) stuff raises my anxiety. I’d much rather stay at home in my pajamas.” Bell’s only real gossip-page coverage has come from his romance with Evan Rachel Wood. The two met in 2005 while filming Green Day’s music video for Wake Me Up When September End. They dated for about a year, got tattoos for each other and then parted, only to reunite recently.

Rumours of a wedding in the offing are exactly that – nothing but Rumours.

“I believe in marriage,” Bell says, “but we’re 25.

Commitment seems completely unreasonable at this point. Maybe this is my generation speaking, but is it OK for young people to commit to each other in such a way? It’s something I don’t often consider, because it’s so far off my radar.

“I don’t know many people my age who would do that,” he adds.

“We’ve got way too much to be doing.” Bell considers himself typical of 20-somethings, at least in this regard.

“Everything is momentary,” he says.

“I think our generation comes from a bunch of broken marriages. I don’t know many who have parents who are still together.” That’s certainly true of Bell, whose parents split before he was born. He and his older sister were raised by his mother, who made sure that acting was not the be-all and end-all of her talented son’s life. He was 14 when he made his film debut in Billy Elliot and, though its success brought him numerous offers, he decided – with the encouragement of his mother – to finish school before resuming work.

It was two years before he made another film, but since then he has barely stopped. He played a solder in Deathwatch (2002) and the crippled schoolboy Smike in Nicholas Nickleby (2002). Peter Jackson hired him for King Kong (2005) and Clint Eastwood cast him as World War II hero Ralph Ignatowski in Flags of Our Fathers (2006).

Flags of Our Fathers was the most demanding film Bell had made since Billy Elliot, and he admits that he found it scary to work with Eastwood.

“Clint’s methods are very specific,” Bell explains, “because he was an actor for a very long time. He cuts out all the crap in terms of the way a director would approach an actor. It’s Point A to Point B
Someone seasoned, like Sean Penn, doesn’t need all the oohs and aahs of a director blowing smoke.” That doesn’t n e c e s s a r i l y apply, of course, to teenage Brits with only a handful of film credits.

“At the time I was 19 and so afraid,” Bell recalls. “Clint trusted us to do it, but at the same time I felt, ‘Oh Lord, I might need a little shove in this direction or that direction.”’ Today those worries are gone. Instead Bell is trying to figure out how far he can stretch himself.

“I’d love to do more funny roles,” he says. “I don’t know if I can do romance. In Jane Eyre (2011) my character proposed to Jane, but that wasn’t very romantic.” His next project is unlikely to be either funny or romantic: Filth is based on a novel by Irvine Welsh, who also wrote the novel on which Trainspotting (1996) was based.

“James McAvoy plays a cop going through a bit of a dark time,” Bell says. “I’m also a cop. There’s a promotion, and James is trying to sabotage my chances for it.” A sequel to The Adventures of Tintin is already in the works.

“Steven has gone on record as saying that Peter Jackson is doing the next one,” Bell says.

Although he is a skilled tap dancer, Bell has made a point of avoiding dance movies. He has no problem with having starred in Billy Elliot, but that was some time ago now, and he wants to be seen as what he is, not what he was then.

“Even if that will never be entirely possible.

Billy Elliot is going to follow me the rest of my life,” Bell says. “It was such a massive deal and such a great point of reference. To a lot of people, that’s still who I am.”

MONTREAL - The last time I saw Jamie Bell on screen, he was playing a violent, deadly diseaseinfected soldier in Carl Tibbets's claustrophobic thriller Retreat, which screened at the Fantasia Film Festival in July.

It's hard to believe that's the same guy as the affable actor who greeted me at the plush St. James Hotel last week to discuss his equally unrecognizable role as the good-natured, tirelessly upbeat and distinctly cartoonish title character in The Adventures of Tintin.

Stephen Spielberg and Peter Jackson's animated blockbuster hits screens Friday in Quebec, 12 days before the rest of North America, as part of a gradual release strategy aimed at building hype stateside.

Unlike American audiences, the British-born Bell needed no introduction to Tintin:

"I love this character," he said. "Since I was 8 years old, I've been following his adventures with great enthusiasm. I really loved the spirit of Tintin, his relationships with people and what he stood for. He's a beacon of excellence for young people.

"I really respected him, because I felt like (Tintin author) Hergé really respected his audience. He took (kids) places, showed them real issues and really shared things with them."

Tintin isn't the only icon of his youth that Bell reconnected with on this project. Working with Spielberg was a chance to collaborate with the man who gave the actor his earliest experience with the big screen.

"Steven was my gateway into movies," Bell said. "The first film I saw in the theatre was Jurassic Park. I was in awe and amazed and terrified - everything you want to be as a kid. It was the greatest ride of my life."

A great ride is an apt description of The Adventures of Tintin. Spielberg acquired the film rights from Hergé shortly before the artist's death in 1983, but held off on doing anything until he found a way to convey the magic of Hergé's comic books.

Enter co-producer Peter Jackson, who proposed the solution with his motioncapture technology. They recruited Bell, motion-capture veteran Andy Serkis (who suited up to play Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong in Jackson's 2005 remake) as Tintin's pal Captain Haddock, and Bond-man Daniel Craig as evil pirate Red Rackham.

All three donned special body suits and hashed it out for six weeks in a dark room in L.A.'s Culver City.

The result is an enchanting journey that - though it drags a bit in the second half - does a generally commendable job of making even grown-ups feel like kids again.

Playing Tintin was a childhood dream come true for Bell, but it provided a challenge for him as an actor.

"I jumped back into that 8-year-old (me) with great enthusiasm," he said.

"I read through all 23 (Hergé) adventures. But the problem I hit was, 'I don't know who (Tintin) is. I don't know anything about him. I know he's Tintin the great adventurer, the intrepid reporter who is curious, fearless and has great heroic instincts - but what's his last name?

"How can he afford his own apartment? Why is his only friend a dog? Why does he hang out with an alcoholic? He writes for a newspaper, but nothing ever appears in print. These are really specific questions which for an actor will define how you approach the role."

In the end, Bell realized that there were no answers to his questions, and perhaps that's the point. The fact that Tintin is a blank slate is central to his appeal.

"The reason he's so successful is because he's a mystery," Bell said. "The more he's a mystery, the more you can project what you want him to be, or what you want to be. For me as an actor researching this, you can't answer those questions. It's not my responsibility."

So he left all the good lines to his boisterous (and frequently inebriated) pal Captain Haddock and concentrated on the simplicity of his role as humble hero. Along the way, he was drawn to what Tintin most obviously is - a man of action.

"Tintin is a very physical character," he said. "The way Hergé drew him, he is always very much on the move. When he thinks about something, he strikes a pose; and when he's down talking to (his dog) Snowy, he's in a very specific position.

"For me, it was about creating that sense of dynamics through a physicality that was explosive. Being a dancer for so long definitely helped."

Bell has danced since the age of 6, getting his acting start as a boy ballerina in the 2000 film Billy Elliot. He used that experience on the set, which Spielberg had plastered with Tintin images.

"We would look at panels from the comic book and go, 'Let's do that pose now,' " Bell said. "Those physical elements were crucial to the entire makeup of the character."

It was all part of the bigger picture, which was paying tribute to the man behind the original Tintin stories.

"(Spielberg) wanted it to be a Hergé adventure, nothing else," Bell said. "I think that's what he did, in his own way. I think as filmmakers - as artists, as composers of images - Hergé and Steven are not too dissimilar."

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn is playing in Montreal and opens in the rest of Canada later this month.

A foundation in dance is not a bad thing for an actor. Back in the day, at New York City’s Neighborhood Playhouse, the likes of Gregory Peck, Eli Wallach, Joanne Woodward, and Marian Seldes took classes from America’s high priestess of modern dance, Martha Graham. “The body says what words cannot,” Graham decreed, and she was right. Case in point: Jamie Bell. As a dance-trained youngster, he leapt to stardom with his role in the 2000 film Billy Elliot, poignant as the shy boy with jug ears who loves to dance. He won that year’s BAFTA Award for best actor—at 14! Shortly thereafter, young Bell met with Steven Spielberg, who was planning to make a live-action movie based on the beloved Belgian comic-book series “The Adventures of Tintin.” Although the project didn’t move forward, Bell did, working on other movies with major filmmakers—Peter Jackson, Clint Eastwood, and Spielberg among them. And then The Adventures of Tintin caught up with Bell. Spielberg and Jackson came together and decided the film should be animated, using performance-capture technology as part of the process. Bell was called to New Zealand to have a go at the new technology, and was again offered the role. “The character’s a very physical one,” he says. “So because of my dance background there was something about that kind of expression in me that I think they were looking for.” Meanwhile, in the live-action thriller Man on a Ledge, to be released a month after Tintin, look for the dance moves Bell throws into the mix. He has not outgrown Billy—or those charming ears.

Now working with Steven Spielberg, Jamie Bell has come a long way since Billy Elliot. Lucy Foster meets a transatlantic success story.

“Oh. My. God.”

Jamie Bell groans while slumped despondently on a sofa, covering his face with his hand. But this isn’t a response to an awkward question, or, more likely, a reaction to one of ShortList’s best jokes. This is because we’ve mentioned a sensitive subject: Arsenal.

“It’s so depressing,” he continues, running his hand over his face in manner of an exhausted but resigned parent of a problem child.

Bell is a devoted Gunner and, at the time of our interview, the 8-2 thrashing by Manchester United was the figurative knife in the ribs. (We can only assume the subsequent loss to Blackburn and a defeat in the North London derby has elicited similar expressions of anguish.) But, start of the season — it’s all to play for, right? “Not really,” he mumbles. “It’s only all to play for in the hope we don’t end up eighth in the table.” And with that, Jamie Bell, AKA Billy Elliot, and currently the eponymous boy detective in Steven Spielberg’s latest Hitchcockian animation The Adventures Of Tintin, stares across the hotel room, lost in a football-soaked gloom.

Panicking, we quickly change direction. Without Arsenal’s current form tainting the mood, 25-year-old Bell is infectiously enthusiastic, fast-talking, and fond of gesticulations and self-deprecating dialogue to illustrate his points. And while he’s not tall, his broad back and arms are trademark giveaways of his training as a dancer. His accent — which bounces from northeast England to West Coast America with every clause — clearly illustrates that this is a man who’s spent the past 10 years flying over the Atlantic.

That in itself is an indication of his incredible acting success. It was in 1999, when Bell was just 13, that he was chosen from 2,000 schoolboys to play the title role of Billy Elliot; a performance that won him a Bafta. Since then, he’s continued to work in high-profile productions, from Nicholas Nickleby in 2002 to Peter Jackson’s King Kong in 2005, Clint Eastwood’s Flags Of Our Fathers in 2006 to Defiance with Daniel Craig in 2008, and most recently, 2011’s The Eagle with Channing Tatum. He’s carved out a career as a supporting character actor of note, but now that he’s Tintin (which is surprisingly gritty for an animation, we should add), is he realising his ambitions to become a leading man, a Tom Cruise-style action star?

“I think you have to figure out your signature as an actor, just as directors have to figure out what movies they like to make. It’s constantly evolving. But… Tintin is still a character-actor role,” he explains, swiftly circling the question. Something else, ShortList discovers, that he’s perfected over the past decade.

“He’s not particularly a lead character. You don’t know a lot about him, only because Hergé [Tintin’s creator] didn’t really tell us anything about him. Why is his only friend a dog? Where are his parents? Why isn’t anyone telling him he should really go to school? Possibly even university? Why does he constantly put himself in danger? He calls himself a reporter, but you never see him write anything for a newspaper. These are all really valid questions. Tintin, the character, is actually the biggest riddle of the whole thing.”

And whether he wants to recognise it or not, Tintin the film is set to make Bell an international star a second time over. The motion capture and animation mash-up is the realisation of a long-held ambition of Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson. Three-year rights to a film version of Tintin were acquired by Spielberg in 1983, just after Hergé’s death (it has been said that the author believed Spielberg was “the only person who could do Tintin justice”). The released rights then bounded between various directors and studios until Spielberg re-optioned them in 2002, bringing on his friend Jackson as producer, and his visual-effects company responsible for such wonders as Gollum from The Lord Of The Rings, Weta Digital, in 2004. Wrangles over money and the pioneering nature of the technology ensured progress was frustratingly sluggish, but after the team wrapped filming in spring 2009, it’s not until now — October 2011 — that Spielberg’s 28-year project is about to get its first public airing.
WORKING WITH GIANTS

The enormity of sharing a set with two screen greats hasn’t been lost on Bell. “It’s kind of ridiculous. You’d think that it wouldn’t work — egos are way too big. But they had a great time. They’ve wanted to do this for so long.” And the passion involved in the project has obviously affected the whole team, as Bell recounts how everyone pitched in with their own ideas.

“They’re collaborators,” he explains. “They just want to make a good movie. The idea that the best idea wins is a great concept because it means you’re challenging each other all the time.”

But wasn’t he scared to speak up? “You know, at first I was like [puts on a small voice], ‘I kind of have an idea...’ because it’s Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson and they’re going [rubs his chin and adopts a serious, deep voice], ‘How do we do this?’ And I’m like, ‘God, I just love watching their brains work. This is amazing!’ But once you get over it, you just go, ‘But what happens if I do this?’ and you get the same childlike exuberance and excitement about what you’re doing that they obviously have in bucketloads.”

Enthusiasm may have been plentiful, but it would have been needed to get through the brain-frying days (“Up at 4.30am, picked up at 5am, straight into painting dots on your face [for motion capture], ready to go at 7.30am and the boss would walk in at 8am. We’d wrap around 7pm. Get home, sleep. It’s acting Olympics”) and the various rewrites.

“We were learning lines a lot of the time because the script had gone through so many incarnations,” reveals Bell. “The way Steven works is that he really likes to be surprised on the day, so nothing is ever that concrete. That’s great because it makes the project fluid, but you get home, and you’re like, ‘Thank God I’m home,’ and then you get an email at 10pm and it’s, ‘Great! Twenty pages for tomorrow. Better start learning it now.’”

Of course, Spielberg and Jackson weren’t the only two big names pacing the studio floor. Motion-capture king Andy Serkis plays the well-refreshed Captain Haddock, Nick Frost and Simon Pegg are the substandard detectives Thomson and Thompson (“They’re amazing. They can’t stop being the double act”), and Daniel Craig as main villain Sakharine also appears on the credits. Craig doesn’t present such a daunting prospect for Bell, though — they have previous on Defiance.

“He’s so generous. And so nice. And so funny. And so does not take himself seriously at all,” Bell says, which may come as a shock to many who have kept tabs on Craig’s procession from stage actor to Hollywood A-list. “While filming Defiance, we spent a lot of time in the forests of Lithuania, drinking vodka together, shooting the sh*t.

I would watch him wander around with a gun and think, ‘He does that really well, he should play James Bond.’ And then seeing him come in for just a couple of weeks with Tintin and create this evil, bad guy, and you’re like, ‘F*ck, you’re a great actor. You’re a great actor. Wow!’”

Freezing his proverbials in the Baltic states (“It was November! It was sub-zero! The cameras were frozen!”) isn’t the only hardship Bell has had to contend with in his career. The Eagle, a tale based around the Roman Army’s Ninth Legion which disappeared when they tried to conquer the Celts of now-Scotland, was also beset with environmental ‘difficulties’. To keep off the cold, the stars had hot water poured inside their suits. Only leading man Channing Tatum was subject to one particularly toasty input of water, resulting in a badly burned groin. “Ah, but I always checked [the water] before they put it in,” explains Bell. “Common sense, you know. It gets you through in the end.”
FEET ON THE GROUND

Common sense would appear to be something Bell has in spades. Forget the Biarritz yachts and private islands you’d expect from an A-list holiday — Bell has just returned from his break of choice: roaming around darkest Scotland with friends. “We were just hanging out, making fires, walking next to rivers, climbing hills and scampering around. We rented this cottage…” and out comes his phone to show ShortList the pictures. ‘Rural’ doesn’t cover it. ‘Blair Witch’ kind of does. Does it ever cross his mind that someone could knock on the door late at night? “I kind of enjoy that fear. You know, ‘Ooh, this could be dangerous.’”

However, horror films, Bell informs us, are not part of his career plan — but as he can dance, and take a natty photo with an iPhone app (Picture Show, 69p, seeing as you asked), we wonder to which other creative pursuits he could lend his talents.

“Well, photography for sure. I love photography,” he concedes. “Definitely not writing books. God, writing a novel sounds like suicide. But screenwriting I could maybe do. I’m good at taking a screenplay and saying what could be better about it. Not with Tintin, obviously. Can you imagine? ‘Hey! Steven! Let me tell you what’s wrong with the third act!’ But if it’s a project where you’re allowed to have your two cents and allowed to be heard, I can fight my corner.”

That fighting spirit — and the love of raw, northern landscapes — might have something to do with his childhood in the dramatic but industry-scarred Tees Valley (“a beautiful part of the world. Rustic. Rustic and hard”). Talking about his background, there’s one question that’s been playing on our mind: when it comes to football, why didn’t he ever support his local team? “Because that would be too easy, wouldn’t it?” he laughs. But, in actual fact, it was a little more prosaic than that. “I asked my mum for a football jersey. ‘Mum, I‘ve got to get a football jersey, it’s really important because everyone at school is wearing them, and I don’t have one,’ and she came back with a London club. And I was like, ‘What the f*ck is this?’” And then adopting a softer tone, “Obviously, I was very appreciative that I had one. She tried her damned hardest.”

But surely it was tantamount to high-school suicide? “There was one other guy who supported Arsenal. It was like, ‘Oh my God, please, everyone else supports Middlesbrough and United. What are we going to do?’ Believe me, I stuck to him like f*cking glue.”

Jamie Bell: the eternal orphan

Billy Elliot turned him into a ‘brat’. But playing Tintin, in Steven Spielberg’s eye-popping new film, has made Jamie Bell realise what he really is – a lost child.

Jamie Bell had to get a grip. There he was, the star of Billy Elliot, an unknown 15 year-old from a single-parent family in Billingham, Teesside, who beat hundreds of other wannabes to play the working class boy who loved ballet in the 2000 film. He won a Bafta; Russell Crowe was his new best friend. What was not to like? Himself, it seems.

“I lost my mind at 15,” says Bell of his hype-induced meltdown. He went back to school and managed to finish his GCSEs. But, “I’d been shown a world where there were no boundaries, where everyone gave me all the power. And I was like, ‘This is great!’ Then that was gone. But I was like, ‘Yeah, but I still want that.’ I’d lost my humble, very quiet, introverted sensibilities which I think I definitely had as a kid. And I…” Became a brat?

“Yeah, I became a little a-------,” he smiles. “And, you know, you’re a 15-year-old kid so it’s your world. And I was a b------ at 16! But still, looking back on it now, it was worrying because it is very persuasive, and you have all these grown-ups who it seems are encouraging it. And that’s unhealthy.” But unlike so many child stars before him, Bell’s spin-out was short-lived.

His mother, his manager and Stephen Daldry, the Billy Elliot director who became the mentor and father figure that Bell had never had, helped steer him right. (Bell has never had contact with his father, who left before he was born.) He chose parts in a few indie films, and turned down parts in American teen movies, “which focused on me as a kid. I wanted to still be a kid, but I came from the north east of England. I didn’t really sympathise or empathise with those kinds of characters.” And so he quietly got on with building a decent career as an actor. The rampaging ego retreated.

Since then he’s had a busy, buzzy career working with edgy(ish) directors such as Carey Fukunaga (in last month’s Jane Eyre), Kevin MacDonald (in spring’s The Eagle), David Mackenzie (in 2007’s Hallam Foe) and Thomas Vinterberg (in 2005’s Dear Wendy) as well as marquee names like Clint Eastwood (Flags of our Fathers) and Peter Jackson (King Kong). But he is still, to many cinemagoers, That Kid Who Was In Billy Elliot. So when, a couple of years ago, he was asked to call to try out for the lead in a blockbusting superhero franchise, he thought he’d be a fool to say no.

Even though “I never really sympathised with Peter Parker,” Bell agreed to audition for the title role in director Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man.

“Well, no, I definitely sympathise with him,” Bell hastily corrects himself. He’s still only 25, yet having made his award-winning acting debut 11 years ago, he’s Hollywood-savvy enough to know he should never rule himself out of any role or character or idea of a character. “But I’ve just never seen myself as Peter Parker,” he says. “I’ve always been more of a Batman person.

“But, you know, it is the biggest franchise in Hollywood for a young male actor. When you’ve got Sony [the Spider-Man studio] saying, ‘We really want you to come and screen test,’ of course you’re gonna do it — it’s a very flattering position to be in. Especially when you consider the other people that are also doing it.” One of those other people auditioning was Andrew Garfield, the fellow Brit (although he’s American-born) acclaimed and famed for his role in The Social Network. Bell and Garfield — who is the “nicest guy” — “had a great time” in what Bell calls “Spidey school: a great exercise, a great workout, learning all these fight routines.

“Then we were at this dinner — and this was right before [the casting] got announced — and a salt shaker fell off the table. And Andrew and I both instinctively went like this” — Bell shoots out his arm in a web-slinging, catch-a-falling-child move — “and there was a look in both our eyes: ‘We’ve been to Spidey school too long…’”

In the end Garfield got the part; Spider-Man swings into cinemas in July next year, and Garfield’s life will never be the same again. But Bell understands, and claims not to be bothered. “I think they made a great decision. He’s a really great actor. And I’m really excited about the movie.”

When this kind of thing happens — when Actor X is chosen over Actor Y — do studio bosses ever bother to tell the loser why he’s not The One? Bell thinks for a minute. Is it impolitic to reveal such behind-the-velvet-curtain machinations? “Well, it’s just like, eh,” he eventually stutters. “No, they never usually do that. Marc sent me a very nice email and was really thankful for all the work I’d done. But I think it’s just simple — when the studio heads and producers and directors sit down, they see something and go, ‘That’s the version of the movie we want to make.’ They didn’t want to make my version — totally fine,” he shrugs, slapping his thigh. “I have no issue with that.” Ultimately, he concludes, “you can’t really be analytical of the decision-making process. You just can’t. You have to move on.” Luckily, Bell had something great to move on to.

The youngster from Teesside is now the living embodiment of another boy-adventurer, one even more storied than Peter Parker: Tintin. And Bell’s new cinematic collaborators are every bit as famous as the character, if not more so: Steven Spielberg, the most successful populist film-maker ever, and Peter Jackson, helmsman of the box-office-busting Lord of the Rings trilogy and forthcoming Hobbit two-parter.

The Adventures of Tintin is directed by Spielberg and produced by Jackson. Responsibility for adapting the adventures of Hergé’s heroic Belgian cub reporter to the big screen 80 years after his first print appearance fell to a triumvirate of multitasking British writers: Steven Moffat (now showrunner on Doctor Who), Edgar Wright (director of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim Versus the World) and Joe Cornish (radio personality director of Attack the Block). They based their script on an amalgamation of three Tintin books: The Crab With the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham’s Treasure.

The cast is equally weighty and inspired. Daniel Craig is villainous Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharine, Andy Serkis is Captain Haddock, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are Thomson and Thompson, and some brilliant computerised jiggery-pokery “is” Snowy the trusty terrier. But Bell is obviously front and centre.

Much of the filming took place over eight weeks in a California studio almost three years ago, while animation and effects teams in Los Angeles and New Zealand spent 18 months working on 1,240 camera shots. But such are the groundbreaking technicalities of this new kind of film-making process that The Adventures of Tintin was still being worked on mere weeks before its worldwide premiere.

It takes a long time to digitally conjure up Saharan deserts, boiling oceans and nameless middle-European cities at some indeterminate point in the mid-20th century. Judging by the footage I was shown, one thing was clear: this Tintin doesn’t stint on old-fashioned adventure. And it’s set in 1940, in Nazi-occupied Belgium, which, says Bell, “helps us make the film much more of a film noir, makes it more of a Hitchcock thriller versus just a kids’ action film”.

The director and Bell first talked about him playing Tintin a decade ago. Back then the idea was for a completely live action film, with Stephen Daldry behind the camera. But Bell is glad that didn’t work out, for in The Adventures of Tintin — at this point, it’s planned as a three-film series — he gets to be a franchise superhero no one will recognise. For the young actor intent on maintaining some semblance of a normal life, what could be better than “a 3D animated film driven by motion-capture performances”.

Come again? “The world, everything that you’re really looking at [in the film], is manufactured. Nothing is real,” explains Bell. Using the same technology that brought the Lord of the Rings character Gollum to life, Bell and co act out their scenes wearing suits and facial sensors that record their movements, and this is used to animate the characters. Thus we see Tintin in his familiar form, blond, bequiffed and snub-nosed. Maybe over the course of the whole film it will be obvious that it is Bell in the lead role. But on a brief viewing the actor is, literally, lost in the role. “The movie is driven by characters that are performance-capture — and by actors.”

So is it an animated film or a motion-capture film? “Well,” he exhales, “it kind of falls in the middle of those two.” Or, as Spielberg puts it, “Every single human being represented in Tintin is an actor giving a full performance — an emotional performance, a villainous performance — and that all shines through the digital make-up. We watched Hergé’s characters be reborn as living beings, expressing feelings and displaying souls, and the effect was startling.”

These days Bell lives in LA, whence he relocated three years ago after a short stint in New York. Over the course of our interview his accent reverts to his Teesside roots. But with a few American roles under his belt, he’s developed something of a transatlantic twang. In Tintin he has another voice still — a light, breathless, very English gasp. How did he arrive at that? “Steven said he loved my own voice, which is kind of a wise voice but wasn’t soft around the edges, and still had a bit of bite to it. So he wanted to lose as much as [possible from] my regional sound and just maintain the energetic yet wise and still not too… I don’t know… divisive on a socio-economic scale!”

Is that why his Tintin sounds so posh? “Right, right, right,” he says hurriedly. “I was just pleased that he didn’t say, ‘So he’s gonna speak with an American accent,’ ’cause if they’d have done that, that would have been really hard to commit to. That would have been really absurd. And I had always wanted to drop in merde or something when he gets something wrong,” he smiles. “But Tintin is the beacon of excellence, so he doesn’t really swear.”

With his face lightly fuzzed by stubble, his eyes framed by cool, black-rimmed reading glasses, and a hefty book of Hungarian photography under his arm, the Jamie Bell who sits down in the central London hotel suite this early autumn morning certainly looks more grown-up than he is in the popular imagination. “Jamie is not Billy Elliot any more by any means,” says Simon Pegg, “but he’s still got that boyish frame.”

He’s a calm and relaxed conversationalist, although such is his youth — or his hot-property status — that his manager spends the duration of our interview loitering in the lavatory, listening in. Yes, the actor who used to date actress Evan Rachel Wood is currently in a relationship. No, we won’t be talking about her identity, or profession.

But Bell is happy to discuss his love of Radiohead (he listens to them while “night-biking” in Santa Monica, plays guitar and, as a hobby, performs covers with a friend in LA); his games of football with Charlie Hunnam (the Queer as Folk star, another Hollywood transplant from the English North East); how living in LA is more a practical, work-orientated decision than anything else; and about his enthusiasm for photography — he has aspirations to write and direct, and finds narrative inspiration in pre- and post-war European reportage imagery.

Photography, he says, is “a good way of stimulating the brain”. Pointing at a photograph in his coffee-table book captioned “Citroën car strike, 1940, France”, he’s overcome with Tintin-ish enthusiasm. “What a great setting for a movie. Which of this crowd of people shouting at the foreman do I want to follow as a character? What’s his relationship with his parents or with his girlfriend? Is he gonna cross the picket line?”

Recently he and his friend the Irish actor Cillian Murphy — with whom he’s just made the thriller Retreat — were talking about themselves (actors tend to do that). Who are you? What are you defined as? Bell couldn’t for the life of him pigeonhole the star of Batman Begins, Breakfast on Pluto and The Wind that Shakes the Barley. But Murphy had Bell pegged. “Well, you’re an orphan.”

“And I was like, ‘Oh my God!’” gasps Bell. “Look back, I don’t think I’ve played one role where I have both parents. The Eagle — mum and dad murdered. Jane Eyre — father just died, they’re in mourning. Dear Wendy — his father dies and he doesn’t have a mother, raised by a nanny. King Kong — there’s no back story to that character. Undertow — no mother, and also father gets murdered. Deathwatch — ah, if he did, they’re probably terrible parents.

“Hallam Foe — big dead mum,” he says of the Edinburgh-set Oedipal drama. “Nicholas Nickleby — dead parents, brutalised and given away. And Tintin — no parents, never mentioned in any book.” He laughs ruefully. “That’s my pigeonhole. But there’s something about that. There is some weird signature. I don’t mind the continuity of that idea.”

With his own father entirely absent from his life, Jamie Bell understands why he’s offered these roles. And why he might be good at them, “I get it. I know what that is. So I think I can bring something to [these type of roles] that’s a little bit more personal and maybe a little bit more educated in that way.”

Next on his schedule is Filth, an adaptation of the scabrous Irvine Welsh novel about a necrotically corrupt Edinburgh policeman. James McAvoy is the lead, Bell his sidekick. If he was fixed in cinemagoers’ imagination as Hergé’s boy detective, playing a bent detective might be too much of a leap.

On every level, then, him as Tintin is perfect casting.

“The anonymity with it is amazing,” he nods. “I don’t think many people can say they’ve been the lead in a Spielberg film and still been able to live their normal life that they had before. You still maintain your mystery.

“That’s a huge part of it for me, that you can literally hide behind this puppet. Also, it means that it is completely immersive — it is a character, instead of an actor playing Tintin. I’m really immersed in it. I’m really gone. Which,” Bell beams, “is great.”

Let’s assume for the moment that you have the backing of a major film studio. Got that? Good. Now, turning a cartoon strip into a CGI film seems like one of the easier film making tasks — the characters have been designed and the film is already storyboarded. You can just sit back and let the animators fill in the gaps. Right?

Not quite, it turns out. These shots depicting the making of Steven Spielberg’s upcoming blockbuster The Adventures Of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn suggest just how tough it can be.

The move from Hergé’s original work [2] to concept art [3] is the simplest — it was a chance for the artists at effects studio Weta to bring their favorite scenes closer to reality. But where do you go from there?

Live-action was discussed, but when motion-capture [4] was agreed on, the look of Tintin (played by Jamie Bell) was the trickiest proposition. “Human faces have muscle structure, wrinkles and so on,” explains Weta’s Marco Revelant. “The original face ended up smooth like a ball without these essential characteristics. When we started adding them, it no longer looked like the graphic.” Put simply, you lose the instant recognition that such an iconic character should have.

Eventually, having solved how the characters should appear, the film can be made. The final shot in the sequence [4] is originally from Red Rackham’s Treasure, one of the three books that have been adapted for the film (with The Secret Of The Unicorn and The Crab With The Golden Claws).

Notice the difference between the stormy seas of the artwork and the relative calmness of the finished film? That was borne out of making Tintin exist in the “real world” — as Weta’s Keith Miller accepts, if they depicted the water as being as turbulent as shown in the original panel, “the seaplane wouldn’t be able to take off”.

So, clearly it’s not as easy as we thought. In fact, we may now rank it second trickiest — after working with a cast consisting of children, animals and a seriously ticked-off Christian Bale.

An ex-cop turned con threatens to jump to his death from a Manhattan hotel rooftop. The nearest New York Police officer immediately responds to a screaming woman and calls dispatch. More Officers arrive with SWAT and tactical command along with fire-fighters. The police then dispatches a female police psychologist personally requested to talk him down from the ledge. However, things aren't as straightforward and clearcut as they appear to be.

Martin (Cillian Murphy) and Kate (Thandie Newton) don’t screw around. When tragedy befalls them they don’t just isolate themselves in a cabin in the mountains, or take off for a distant country for an escape. Oh no, these two hightail it to a remote cottage. On an island. Completely by themselves. The only means of contact with the boat captain on the mainland who can come pick them up is a CB radio held together with duct tape and luck. It would seem like exactly what is needed after the trauma their marriage has suffered except for a generator that dies and the arrival of an unannounced guest- a young man named Jack (Jamie Bell) who stumbles towards the house bloodied and packing heat. They take him in and Jack soon reveals some disturbing information that is going to keep them trapped inside together for the foreseeable future.

Of course the fun in a film like RETREAT is in the revelation of the threat and the subsequent suspense when trust becomes an issue. These films live and die by their ability to engage audiences in the characters and their situations and this one certainly delivers. All the actors here are top notch, Murphy and Newton being especially in top form as more is revealed by what they don’t say to each other at times than what they do. First time director Carl Tibbetts keeps things moving at a rapid pace leaving little room for stress relief as the tension escalates and the script has more than just a few wicked surprises.

Far be it from me to spoil any of the twists in RETREAT but by the end I’m sure you will agree (as Martie and Kate would), they should have just stayed home and hired a therapist. (Brian Kelley)

Following a personal tragedy, Kate (Newton) and Martin (Murphy) try to repair their increasingly strained relationship by revisiting the remote island cottage where they were once happy. But this island retreat proves more isolated than expected.

The generator shorts out, radio signals prove increasingly erratic and the cracks in the couple’s relationship start to grow ever worse. Then one day an injured soldier (Bell) is washed ashore, claiming a lethal airborne virus is devastating the outside world and that they must barricade themselves in the cottage if they wish to survive. But is he telling the truth…

Grimm’s Eye View: A tense, character-driven thriller, this taut three-hander is a harrowing study in emotional and psychological trauma. Exploring the effects of alienation and escalating paranoia, it is woundingly well-played by a strong and committed cast, making expert use of the beautiful yet remote locations. An auspicious debut for writer-director Carl Tibbetts.

Actor Jamie Bell takes a breather from Hollywood by taking over 6Music for an hour to play you some of his favourite songs from some of his favourite artists.

Since winning a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in 2001 for his lead role in coming of age film Billy Elliot, Jamie Bell has played a mix of leading roles in small independent films and supporting roles in big budget films such as Peter Jackson's version of King Kong. He'll next be seen but not heard in the title role of Steven Spielberg's 3D motion capture epic The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn.

For the next 60 minutes expect to hear the soundtrack to Jamie's career to date.
